With 22 years old she’s already considered as an Off-beat illustrator artist and also DJ living in London.

Currently she is the creative director of The Estethetica Review, a publication focused on ethical fashion published biannually in conjunction with the British Fashion Council. Other ongoing projects include the Painted Truths series for Notion Magazine, and AnOther Fashion Cartoon for Another Magazine and everythingissoamazing.com. As a fashion designer Margot Bowman has showcased her S/S 2012 capsule collection ‘Albion 2080’ – Clothes for British Women of the Future. Inspired by a sustainable mentality, Margot manages to turn the organic, earthy tones associated with recycled fashion on their head with her unique, painterly graphic style. Margot’s collaged creation can be seen as a part of WGSN (Online leader Trend Forecast service) A/W 13/14 print and graphic forecast, referencing the DIY aesthetics seen in hack-tivate.

Hello Margot. Please, tell me whatever remarkable of your childhood: We had a pet tortoise called Frank, he liked eating rose petals and jam sándwiches.

Describe yourself (in one or two sentence): I’m curious and I want to change the world.

You’re considered an Off-beat illustrator artist. What does this description mean to you? I think off-beat is pretty accurate! I never want to make work that conforms to expectation, things need to stay fresh and unexpected to ensure that people know that things can be done differently.

You are now living in London, how does this fact affect you? I love London. I think its a great place to experiment and not be too boxed in. People here celebrate creativity and youth so right now its a really good space for me to make work in. Its also a city with contrast totally ingrained in its identity and that’s a really big theme in my work so its great to have that constantly refreshed.

How would you define your painterly graphic style? I think whatever medium I’m working with color is very important in my work. Its the most basic form of non-verbal communication and i think what ever medium I use thats a huge part of what I’m looking for out of the work. Also I think the way I execute my work is very much about control, so with the way I work with acrylic it can be very graphic, very controlled but with ink and water color its all about totally letting go and allowing the medium to be in charge.

Please tell us more about your first capsule collection ‘Albion 2080’: I think fashion and all culture are at its best when it shows the use of new futures, when it allows us to image and therefore act out new ways of being, new normals. So for me the collection was a way to imagine what fashion would be in a world without any factories or shops. The women in the collection are a community and they use decoration to denote their personalities and affinity, the only tools they have are the left over clothes and paint and this is the result. I also wanted to find a visual language about british women that was forward looking and not stuck in the pin-up 1940’s style that you see so often. Its 2012 we must be modern!

In your opinion… How will ‘British Women’ will be in the Future? I think they will have to be more highly skilled. We are moving into a post carbon age; building, hunting, fortune telling, hair cutting will all be traded on a skills for skill basis so we need to be good at things!

How does it feel to be selected to be part of WGSN’s A/W 13/14 print and graphic forecast? That was a really great thing and it definitely inspired me to keep making work like this.

Do you consider yourself as a ‘fashion designer’? I think that my work isn’t about these kind of labels, there are people who’s work is specific and there are others who’s ideas are specific. At the moment I think I’m in the latter group.

Hola Margot. Por favor, cuéntanos algo destacable sobre tu infancia: Teníamos una tortuga como mascota que se llamaba Frank, le gustaba comer pétalos de rosa y sándwiches de mermelada.

Descríbete (en una o dos frases): Soy una persona curiosa y quiero cambiar el mundo.

Estás considerada un artista ilustradora ‘fuera de compás’. ¿Qué significa esta descripción para ti? ¡Creo que ‘fuera de compás’ es una descripción bastante exacta! No me gusta hacer el trabajo ajustándome a las expectativas, las cosas tienen que mantenerse frescas e inesperadas para asegurar que la gente sepa que las cosas pueden hacerse de otra manera.

Ahora estás viviendo en Londres, ¿cómo te afecta este hecho? Me encanta Londres. Creo que es un gran lugar para experimentar y no estar demasiado encorsetado. Aquí la gente celebra la creatividad y la juventud, por lo que este espacio es realmente bueno para desarrollar trabajo. También es una ciudad con un contraste totalmente arraigado a su identidad y este es un tema muy importante en mi trabajo, así que es genial tenerlo constantemente renovado.

¿Cómo definirías tu estilo gráfico-pictórico? Creo que para mí el color es muy importante sea cual sea el medio en el que esté trabajando. Es la forma más básica de comunicación no-verbal y creo que sea cual sea el medio que utilize esa es una parte muy importante de lo que estoy buscando para mi obra. También creo que mi forma de llevar a cabo mi trabajo tiene mucho que ver con el control, así que cuando trabajo con acrílico puede ser muy gráfico, muy controlado, pero con tinta y acuarela todo es cuestión de dejarse llevar por completo permitiendo que el medio esté a cargo.

Por favor, cuéntanos más acerca de tu primera colección cápsula ‘Albion 2080’: Creo que la moda y la cultura está en su mejor momento cuando muestra el uso de nuevos futuros, cuando se nos permite la imagen y representar nuevas formas de ser, nuevos ‘normales’. Para mí la colección es una manera de imaginar lo que sería la moda en un mundo sin ningún tipo de fábricas o tiendas. Las mujeres de la colección son una comunidad y utilizan la decoración para denotar su personalidad y afinidad, las únicas herramientas que tienen son los restos de ropa, la pintura y este es el resultado. También quería encontrar un lenguaje visual de las mujeres británicas de carácter prospectivo y no pegado a la década pin-up de 1940 que se ve muy a menudo. Estamos en el año 2012 tenemos que ser modernos!

Has llamado a tu colección: ‘Ropa para las mujeres británicas del futuro’. En tu opinión… ¿Cómo crees que será la mujer británica en el futuro? Creo que van a tener que ser incluso más cualificadas. Cada vez más nos estamos moviendo hacia una era post-carbono, creación, caza, adivinación, incluso el corte de pelo se negociará en función de las habilidades, por lo que tenemos que ser buenos en  cosas!

¿Qué se siente al ser seleccionada para formar parte del análisis O/I 13/14 sobre estampación y gráfica de WGSN? Es una cosa realmente genial y definitivamente esto me inspiró a seguir trabajando.

¿Te consideras “diseñadora de moda”? Creo que mi trabajo no trata sobre este tipo de etiquetas, hay gente cuyo trabajo es específico y otros cuyas ideas son específicas. Por el momento creo que estoy en el último grupo.
