The wonder of Asia…

After three weeks touring the country, I dare to say that Sri Lanka is a wild and yet unexploited paradise with still so much to discover. But if you are planning to go, do not wait too long and do it before it becomes an amusement park for tourists and posers ‘as unfortunately it has already happened to Thailand and Indonesia’.

So let’s start with Sri Lanka…

Except in Colombo (capital of Sri Lanka) you will always find friendly, curious and humble people all over the country. It is noticeable that Sri lankan men and women have a strong personality, but they especially give away smiles.

Después de tres semanas recorriendo el país, me atrevo a afirmar que Sri Lanka es un paraíso salvaje poco explotado y con todavía mucho por descubrir. Pero si quieres conocerlo no te retrases mucho, y hazlo antes de que se convierta en un parque de atracciones para turistas como desgraciadamente ya le ha ocurrido a Tailandia o Indonesia.

Empecemos con Sri Lanka…

Excepto en la capital Colombo, casi siempre encontrarás gente amable, curiosa y humilde por todo el país. Y aunque se nota que los ceylandeses y ceylandesas también tienen carácter, sobre todo, regalan sonrisas.

As our trip has been at the end of the period of monsoons, we decided to take the following route: Colombo > Dambulla > Pinnawala > Kandy > Ella > Arugam Bay > Mirissa > Galle and finally back to Colombo. There is also the option of not returning to Colombo at the end of your trip and stay the last night in Negombo (as it is closer to the airport).

Como nuestro viaje lo hicimos al final del periodo de monzones, la ruta fue la siguiente: Colombo > Dambulla > Pinnawala > Kandy > Ella > Arugam Bay > Mirissa > Galle y finalmente de vuelta a Colombo. También existe la opción de no volver a Colombo y alojarse la última noche en Negombo (que es una ciudad costera y está más cerca del aeropuerto).

Travel tips:

Once you arrive to Colombo, if you have not hired a guide to drive you to the hotel, I recommend you to take a taxi outside the airport. Transport services inside the airport are way more expensive!

Colombo city does not have too much to see, but it is worth spending a day or a night to walk around, eat good food and to rest a bit before embarking on the adventure. Hangover Hostels are a very good option not to spend too much money and to be in a comfy and very clean place. If you are looking for something more modern, the best option is Ozo Hotel; and if you want something more luxurious… Definitely a good quality / price hotel is Cinnamont Grand which also has Lagoon restaurant inside the hotel (listed as one of the best restaurants throughout Asia and No.1 on trip in Colombo) where you can choose your fish and seafood and staff will instantly prepare it instantly for you.

And also in Colombo city, do not forget to visit Paradise Road a stunning decor shop located on the 213 of Dharmapala Mawatha road, where everything you will see during your trip and always wonder Where to buy it? you will find it there!

Recomendaciones de viaje:

Si al llegar a Colombo no tienes contratado un guía, coge un taxi fuera del aeropuerto, ya que dentro los servicios de transporte no te dejan regatear el precio y son bastante más caros. 

La ciudad de Colombo no tiene mucho encanto, pero no está demás pasar un día o una noche para descansar antes de emprender la aventura. Los Hangover Hostels son una muy buena opción para no gastar mucho dinero y estar en un lugar limpio. Si buscas algo moderno, la mejor opción es Ozo Hotel; y si buscas algo más lujoso, sin duda lo mejor calidad/precio es el hotel Cinnamont Grand, que además tiene en su interior el restaurante Lagoon (catalogado como uno de los mejores restaurantes de toda Asia y Núm.1 en Tripadvisor en Colombo) donde puedes escoger tu pescado y marisco a dedo, y te lo preparan a tu gusto al momento.

Y también en Colombo, no dejes de visitar la tienda Paradise Road situada en 213 Dharmapala Mawatha, ya que todo lo que hayas visto durante el viaje y no has podido comprar, lo encontrarás aquí.

After Colombo a visit to Dambulla is worth just to enjoy the wonderful experience of seeing wild elephants in Minneriya National Park, or travel to Yala National Park (both perfect places for safari). And if you are a true lover of animals, please avoid Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage and Millennium Elephant Foundation, since both are just a business and the experience you will get there is far from what a rescue elephants center means. Unfortunately I have seen elephants screaming while they were hit in front of my eyes.

Vale la pena viajar hasta Dambulla sólo para disfrutar la maravillosa experiencia de ver elefantes salvajes en Minneriya National Park, o viajar hasta el Parque Nacional de Yala (ambos lugares perfectos para hacer un safari). Pero si eres un verdadero amante de los animales, evita tanto el orfanato de elefantes de Pinnawala como el Millennium Elephant Foundation, ambos son un mero negocio turístico y dista mucho de lo que a cuidar o rescatar elefantes se refiere. Desgraciadamente allí he visto como gritan, pegan y ridiculizan a los elefantes con mis propios ojos.

Also near this area (and only if you can afford it) do not miss the chance to stay one/two night at Jetwing Vil Uyana: this beautiful hotel is located in the middle of nowhere!

También es esta área (y si puedes permitírtelo), no pierdas la oportunidad de alojarte uno o dos días en  Jetwing Vil Uyana: este precioso hotel está situado en medio de la nada!

Now it’s time for the Sacred city of Kandy. This bustling hill-country capital is the natural gateway to a lush central region of tea plantations, gurgling streams and stirring Sri Lanka Kandy history.

Where to stay? I recommend you Villa Tranquil  (where owners Shamid and Nuragi) will get treat you as family in their wonderful house with views to the entire city.

Ahora es el momento de visitar la ciudad sagrada de Kandy. Esta capital situada en lo alto de un monte es la entrada natural a una exuberante región de plantaciones de té, gorgoteo de arroyos y de maravillosa historia Sri Lanka Kandy.

Si visitas Kandy, te recomiendo que te alojes en Villa Tranquil (donde sus dueños Shamid y Nuragi) te recibirán como para de su familia en su maravillosa casa con vistas a toda la ciudad.

This city (Kandy) is worth a visit in August to experience the Perahera Festival (wonderful and unique in the world, except for the abuse of elephants that have to be tied with chains for hours while feeling an unbearable heat due to the fire that man-only are carrying along the parade).

Si visitas Kandy, hazlo a posible hacerlo en agosto para vivir en directo el Festival de Perahera (maravilloso e único en el mundo, con excepción del maltrato al que someten a los elefantes durante los desfiles, por tener que ir atados con cadenas durante horas y el calor insoportable que sufren debido  al fuego ardiendo que llevan los portadores de Fuego).

After Kandy now is time for Ella. Perhaps one day is more than enough, because besides wild nature and tea plantations there is not too much too do or to see… But if you finally go, travel up there in the famous (an veeeery old) train of Sri Lanka to experience the wonderful and unique experience in the mountains. And if you can afford it, please book a night at the stunning  98 Acres and get ready to hallucinate with the hotel and the views from your room. Speechless…

Quizás con un día es más que suficiente, pero si decides ir a Ella, viaja hasta allí en el famoso tren de Sri Lanka para vivir la maravillosa y única experiencia por las montañas. Y si puedes permitírtelo, alójate sin falta en el maravilloso 98 Acres y prepárate para alucinar con el hotel y las vistas al despertar. 

After Ella, Arugam Bay is a good idea if you’re looking to relax. This town is just like the ceylan California, with its beautiful beaches and endless waves… Paradise for surfers. Upon arrival, do not be fooled by first appearances because this place will surprise you minute after minute. Within 24 hours you will feel at home and (trust me when I say) that you will end by wanting to stay there at least one week.

Arugam Bay vendría a ser como la California ceylandesa, con sus bonitas playas y olas interminables, paraíso para los surfistas. Al llegar, no te dejes engañar por las primeras apariencias, ya este lugar te sorprenderá. En 24 horas te sentirás como en casa y te querrás quedar allí como mínimo una semana.

From this humble seaside town of Arugam bay I recommend:

• To stay at Seahorse Inn (of the very few B&B with clean and with A/C rooms).
• To live a 100% local experience with Ibu (owner) and his Banana’s Surf Shop (located on the main street of Arugam Bay)
• To have breakfast, lunch and dinner at Hakeem restaurant and not stop to savor his delicious curry, freshly cooked rotis and fresh fish BBQ.
• To find the best waves in Pottuvil Point, Whisky Point, Elephant Point and Main Point where cafe / restaurant / resort  Upali Beach is located.

De este humilde pueblo costero te recomiendo:

• alojarte en el Seahorse Inn (de los pocos B&B con habitaciones limpias y con A/C.
• vivir una experiencia 100% local con Ibu (dueño) y su tienda de surf Banana’s Surf Shop (situada en la calle principal de Arugam Bay)
• desayunar, comer y cenar en Hakeem Restaurant y no dejar de saborear su deliciosos curry, rotis recién hechos y BBQ de pescado fresco del día.
• Buscar las mejores olas en Pottuvil Point, Whisky Point, Elephant Point y Main Point… Donde además está el café / restaurante / resort Upali Beach a primera línea de mar)

After Arugam Bay… Mirissa is a must-see. The truth is that in Mirissa there is nothing very exciting to visit, except by its wonderful beaches, restaurants on the sand, 100% local food and espectacular boutique hotels like the one I was lucky enough to spend a few days in and that I will never, never forget: Casa Colombo Mirissa

Desde mi punto de vista, Mirissa es una ciudad costera de visita obligada. Y aunque en realidad no hay nada muy emocionante que visitar, disfrutarás como un niño de sus playas (sobre todo si eres surfista), restaurantes en la arena, comida 100% local y espectaculares boutiques hotels como el que tuve la suerte de disfrutar y del que jamás, jamás me voy a olvidar: Casa Colombo Mirissa

After Mirissa… Say Hi to Galle, one more city you can not miss! It was declared a World Heritage Site by Unesco in 1988, and although it was severely affected by the Indian Ocean earthquake and tsunami in 2004, now breathes magic and it’s fully restored. Galle has a great mix of influences that belong to the Dutch colony, so you can still enjoy the remains of their unique architecture in the Old Fort area: with its hundreds of souvenir, jewelry and decoration little shops and especially wonderful restored hotels to stay, or simply to visit or to go for lunch or dinner like The Fort Printers, Fort Bazaar Hotel, Galle Fort Hotel.

Galle es otra de las ciudades que no puedes dejar de visitar. Fue declarada Patrimonio de la Humanidad por la Unesco en el año 1988, y aunque resultó muy afectada por el terremoto del océano Índico de 2004, ahora respira majestuosa y totalmente restaurada. Galle tiene grandes influencias de cuando perteneció a la colonia holandesa y puedes disfrutar de los restos de su arquitectura en la zona del Old Fort, con sus cientos de tiendas de souvenirs, joyas y decoración y sobre todo de maravillosos hoteles restaurados a los que alojarse, ir a cenar o simplemente visitar y tomar algo como The Fort Printers, Fort Bazaar Hotel, Galle Fort Hotel.

If I had to recommend one hotel to stay in Galle… I would definitely choose Villa Amma Erna located on the outskirts of the city, because it is not only a hotel but a Masterpiece. And where to eat something reeeeally cheap, good an local? Tell the Tuk Tuk driver to take you to Madeena Hotel restaurant and dare to try their delicious fresh-made Rotis and its famous Rice & Curry.

Si tuviera que recomendarte en uno para alojarte… Sería sin duda Villa Amma Erna situado en las afueras de la ciudad, porque es una obra de arte. Y para comer, dile al conductor del Tuk Tuk que te lleve al restaurante Madeena Hotel y atrévete a probar sus deliciosos Rotis y su famoso Rice & Curry.

Positive:

• People are just AMAZING.
• The weather is good all year except monsoon period that changes twice a year (From May to October in the southwestern half of the country and from October to January in northwestern half). However when it’s bad on one side of the country, it’s good on the other (and viceversa).
• Food is veeeeery cheap in local restaurants. Make sure you try Rice&Curry that can be prepared in hundreds of varieties.
• If you are a food lover you will enjoy Food & Spices Markets especially in Colombo and Dambulla.
• You can live the safari experience with a Jeep without having to travel to Africa, and you’ll be amazed how close you can be of wild elephants in Minneriya National Park or in Yala National Park.
• You don’t need vaccines to travel to Sri Lanka and mosquitoes subject is quite easy-going.
• Most of hotels and restaurants have free wifi (even if they look cheap).
• Taking the Srilankan train is a wonderful experience to tour the whole country.
• Ministry of Crab, the No.2 best restaurant in Colombo on TripAdvisor (worth booking in advance and don’t miss the chance of trying their ‘crab with garlic’).

Negative:

• The big difference of prices between locals and tourists. Tourists can expect to pay even up to 4 times more.
• Do not drink tap water, or fruits and fresh vegetables without peeling them. It is very easy to get diarrhea and / or stomach aches while traveling in Sri Lanka.
• If you’re a lover of Asian food I must tell you: Sri Lanka is not the best foodie country besides for curries and some well done rotis).
• If you are celiac (allergic to gluten) or allergic to milk (lactose, casein…) it won’t be easy for you to eat. And although Srilankan food is usually cooked with coconut milk traditional food uses lots of wheat, cow, goat and buffalo milk and its derivates.

Positivo:

• Su gente.
• El clima es bueno durante todo el año excepto en los meses de monzón que cambian semestralmente, que aunque a ratos sale el sol, llueve cada día (asegurarse antes de viajar a Sri Lanka).
• Si vas a restaurantes locales, comer es barato. No dejes de probar el curry en sus cientos de variedades.
• si eres un amante gastronómico disfrutarás con los mercados de comida y especies sobre todo en Colombo y el mercado de fruta (al por mayor) de Damulla.
• Puedes vivir la experiencia Safari sin tener que viajar hasta África, te sorprenderá lo cerca que puedes llegar a estar de un elefante en Minneriya National Park o en Yala.
• Para viajar a Sri Lanka no hace falta vacunarse y el tema mosquitos es bastante light.
• casi todos los hoteles y restaurantes, por muy cutres que prezcan, tienen wifi gratis.
• maravillosa experiencia la de coger el famoso tren para recorrer la zona de las montañas. 
• El restaurante Ministry of Crab en Colombo, Núm.2 en Tripadvisor (vale la pena reservar para probar el cangrejo con ajo) y si tienes suerte disfrutar a la vez de la música en directo del restaurante contiguo.

Negativo:

• La diferencia de precios entre locales y turistas es exagerada. El turista puede llegar a pagar, incluso, hasta 4 veces más.
• Cuidado con el agua, las frutas y las verduras frescas. Es muy fácil coger diarreas y/o dolores de barriga durante el viaje.
• A excepción de los curry y unos rotis bien hechos, si eres una amante de la comida asiática, Sri Lanka no es el país donde más vas a disfrutar.
• Si eres celíaco (alérgico al gluten), o alérgico a la leche (lactosa, caseïna…) lo tienes bastante complicado. Aunque cocinan mucho con leche de coco, la comida tradicional ceylandesa utiliza mucho el trigo, la leche de vaca, cabra y búfalo y sus derivados.
