This spectacular new jewelry firm comes from Greece by Theodoros Savopoulos; someone with art in its hands and great sensibility inherited from his grandfather.

– Please tell me about you:

I was born in Kavala in northern Greece, raised by wonderful young parents and grandparents in a big Greek family. My mother has always been the happy and exotic touch in my family since she was born and grown up in NY City, where I also used to spend all my summers. I left my parents home at the age of 18, studied Food Chemistry & Technology, served my duties in the Air Force military on a small island and I got my MBA in Athens, after which I dived into the world of jewelry.

– Describe yourself just in one word:

Simple

– How did your passion for jewelry started?

I have always had an affinity with small sized objects and creatures. Tiny shells, insects and animals were my favourite thing as a child; it was the beauty of harmony in miniature proportions that always amazed me. By the age of 15 I had a big collection of rocks and fossils, small shells from the sea, bird feathers, animal teeth and bones from the mountains. I had even grown my own bonsai tree collection, and I had hosted all kind of different creatures in my terrarium for a few days every time. My grandfather, to whom I have always been very close, had even given me a nickname loosely translated as “smallologist”. I know that my passion for jewelry is the extension of my attraction to the world of small and the beauty in details.

– Please describe Theodoros style:

Maybe I could describe my style as organic but not all the time. I admire beauty in its original context. I think every manifestation of natural beauty and what might seem as purely decorative is in fact a life promoting mechanism. I use my own aesthetics and instincts when I design, to guide me to an “attractive” and “desirable” form in a Darwinian and carnal way. I guess people who share similar aesthetics are the ones who find my designs attractive.

– What does inspire you?

Inspiration is something highly volatile. It always comes uninvited actually it ignores all invitations. Inspiration is also the child idea of a random stimuli and latent memories. It is like you discovered something you always knew. Is like something that clicks into its place, an explanation given, a sense of familiarity with something new, a déjà vu!

– What kind of materials do you use for your creations?

I always have and always will gravitate towards gemstones. However, I would have a hard time to commit to only specific materials. My concern when designing is more about synergy. The different materials on a specific piece should like each other, unexpected friendships happen as well as surprising disagreements.

– What is a jewel for you?

Technically speaking, a jewel would be an artistic craft in miniature proportions designed to be wearable in most of the cases. For me, a jewel is the cryptographic quintessence of the wearer’s desires.

– Please tell me about one of your last creations:

It is an amazing snake ring that is wrapped around a huge ruby and around the wearer’s finger. The interesting part is that the snake is fully covered with crispy red rubies, even in the inner surface of the ring where the finger covers this detail. I want my creations to be complete and beautiful even before someone puts them on, because personally I love to know that the piece I’m wearing has hidden beauty and attention to details, just for me to know.

– Of all your creations so far…what is your favourite piece? Why?

There is one very resent creation that I love very much. It is a ring, an amazing spherical white opal grasped by three claws covered in black diamonds. The aggressive curves of the mounting holding the hypnotizing vulnerable opal create an otherworldly charm, connected even to space and the supernatural.

– Where do you sell your jewels?

I mostly work privately with clients who find me, either through word of mouth or through my website.

– What is the nicest thing someone has told you after seeing your jewelry?

“How much for everything?” Or when they say that they can tell I don’t do this for the money.

– So… What would be the perfect jewel?

I don’t think there is such a thing as the perfect jewel. I think it is more about successful match making between jewels and people. Jewelry is more than body ornaments belonging to a world of non-vocal communication. It can be eloquent and very deceptive at the same time.

Esta espectacular nueva firma de joyas llega desde Grécia gracias a su creador Theodoros Savopoulos; alguien con arte en las manos y una gran sensibilidad que heredó de su abuelo.

– Por favor, háblame de ti:

Nací en Kavala en el norte de Grécia, engendrado por unos padres y abuelos maravillosos en una gran familia griega. Mi madre siempre ha sido la que aporta ese toque de felicidad y exotismo en mi familia, ya que nació y creció en Nueva York, donde yo solía pasar todos mis veranos. Me independicé a los 18 años, estudié Química y tecnología alimentaria, hice el servicio militar en las Fuerzas Aéreas en una pequeña isla y realicé un MBA en Atenas; después del cual comencé en el mundo de la joyería.

– ¿Cómo empezó tu pasión por las joyas?

Siempre he tenido afinidad con los objetos y criaturas de tamaño pequeño. Las conchas, insectos y animales han sido siempre mi pasión desde pequeño; era la belleza de la harmonia en proporción miniatura lo que siempre me ha fascinado. A la edad de quince años tenía una inmensa colección de piedras y fósiles, conchas diminutas del mar, plumas de pájaro y dientes y huesos de animales que encontraba por la montaña. También cree mi propia colección de bonsais y guardaba todo tipo de bichos en mi terrario durante varios días. Mi abuelo, a quien siempre he estado muy unido, me puso un apodo por mi afición que podría traducirse como ‘diminutólogo’. Sé que mi pasión por las joyas es la extensión de esta atracción que siento hacia el mundo de las cosas pequeñas y la belleza de los detalles.

– Por favor describe el estilo de Theodoros:

Quizás podría describir mi estilo como orgánico pero no siempre. Admiro la belleza es su contexto original. Creo que cada manifestación de la belleza natural y lo que podría parecer puramente decorativo es en realidad un mecanismo de promoción de vida. Utilizo mi propia estética e instintos cuando diseño, para guiarme hacia una forma atractiva y deseable de manera Darwiniana y carnal. Imagino que la gente que comparte una estética similar a la mia, son los que encuentran atractivos mis diseños.

– ¿Qué te inspira?

La inspiración es algo muy volátil. Siempre llega sin invitación, de hecho no tiene en cuenta ninguna invitación. La inspiración es también la idea infantil de los estímulos al azar y los recuerdos latentes. Es como descubrir algo que siempre supiste. Es como algo que encaja en su lugar, una explicación dada, el sentido de familiaridad con algo nuevo, un déjà vu!

– ¿Qué tipo de materiales utilizas en tus creaciones?

Siempre tengo y siempre gravito hacia las piedras preciosas. Sin embargo, sufriría un momento difícil si me comprometerse a únicamente a ciertos materiales específicos. Mi preocupación en el diseño es más acerca de la sinergia. Los diferentes materiales en una pieza específica tienen que gustarse entre ellos creando amistades inesperadas, así como desacuerdos sorprendentes.

– ¿Qué es para ti una joya?

Técnicamente hablando, una joya sería un oficio artístico de proporciones en miniatura diseñado para ser llevable en la mayoría de las ocasiones. Para mí, una joya es la quinta esencia criptográfica de los deseos de ser llevado.

– Háblame de una de tus últimas creaciones:

Es un anillo de serpiente sorprendente alrededor de un enorme rubí y alrededor de los dedos del que lo luce. Lo más interesante es que la serpiente está completamente cubierta con crujientes rubíes rojos, incluso en la superficie interior del anillo donde el dedo cubre este detalle. Quiero que mis creaciones estén completas y sean hermosas, antes incluso de que alguien las lleve; porque personalmente me encanta saber que la pieza que estoy usando tiene una belleza oculta y una atención a los detalles, aunque sólo yo lo sepa.

– De todas tus creaciones… ¿Cuál es tu pieza favorita y por qué?

Hay una pieza reciente que me gusta mucho. Se trata de un anillo, un sorprendente esfera opal blanca sujeta por tres garras cubiertas por diamantes negros. Las curvas agresivas del montaje sobre el hipnotizante ópalo crear un encanto de otro mundo, conectado incluso al espacio y a lo sobrenatural.

– ¿Dónde vendes tus joyas?

Normalmente vendo de manera privada a clientes que me encuentran a través de boca-oreja o a través de mi Web

– ¿Qué es lo más bonito que alguien te ha dicho al ver tus joyas?

“¿Qué precio me haces por todo?”. O cuando alguien me dice que se nota que no diseño joyas esto por dinero.

– ¿Cómo sería la joya perfecta?

No creo que exista una joya perfecta. Creo que trata más sobre la mezcla perfecta entre la joya y la persona. La joyería es mucho más que ornamentos para el cuerpo, porque pertenecen al mundo de la comunicación no verbal. Una joya puede ser elocuente y engañosa a la vez.
